Emergency management prepares for October public safety exercise
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. - Harvey County Emergency Management is actively preparing a comprehensive public safety training exercise scheduled for October. The update was shared following a recent Local Emergency Planning Committee meeting, which brought together various agencies from across the county to review emergency response displays and coordinate ongoing community safety efforts.
County approves road striping contract
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. - A pavement striping contract with Grand Island-based Straight Line Striping was unanimously approved to service up to 35 miles of county roads. The county will pay $1,355 per mile to stripe 20 miles of newly laid pavement, as well as an additional 10 miles scheduled for paving next month. Harvey County Road and Bridge Department officials noted the rate remains mostly consistent with last year's pricing despite inflation.
12th Street bridge project nears completion
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. - The bridge replacement project on 12th Street, located just west of Ridge Road, is expected to wrap up next month. Harvey County Road and Bridge Department staff reported that crews are currently pouring concrete pavement for the bridge approaches. The remaining incidental work, including the installation of handrails and the removal of falsework underneath the structure, will be completed in the coming weeks.
County seeks volunteers to fill multiple board vacancies
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. - Harvey County is looking for residents to fill several vacant volunteer positions across multiple advisory boards. Current openings include a community representative for the RSVP Advisory Council, a volunteer for the South Central Kansas Economic Development District, two vacant positions on the Harvey County Parks Advisory Board and two spots on the Harvey County Department on Aging Advisory Council.
Aviation commission announces special meeting and open board seat
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. - The Newton City/County Aviation Commission will hold a special meeting at 4 p.m. June 1. The county is also seeking applicants to fill an open volunteer seat on the commission. Officials noted that one candidate has already applied, and interested residents can submit their applications through the county's website.
Local contractor donates labor and materials for Camp Hawk disc golf course
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. - Development of the new disc golf course at Camp Hawk took a major step forward with the completion of all concrete tee pads, aided by significant community donations. Harvey County Parks Director Kass Miller reported that a local contractor donated the crew, time and rebar for the project, leaving the county to cover only the cost of the concrete. Additionally, Miller said a volunteer has dedicated time daily to trimming trees and designing the course.
