County explores reduced scope for courthouse remodel
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — Harvey County is moving forward with scaled-back plans for a courthouse remodel. Harvey County Administrator Kevin Frymire reported Tuesday that staff recently met with Schaefer Architecture to discuss a reduced scope for the long-discussed project. The architects are currently drafting the revised designs, and county staff will present the updated plans to the commission for review once they are completed.
Health department narrows focus for 2026-2029 community health goals
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Harvey County Health Department presented its 2026-2029 Community Health Improvement Plan, significantly reducing its objectives from 46 to 12. Harvey County Health Department Director Lynnette Redington told the commission that the previous plan's high number of goals proved difficult to track and accomplish, with only 18 goals met over the last three years due to data limitations and scattered resources. The newly streamlined plan focuses on realistic, measurable outcomes in partnership with local health organizations.
Prescription medication access identified as key county health priority
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — For the first time, prescription access has been listed as one of Harvey County's top four health priorities. During a presentation on the updated Community Health Improvement Plan, health officials noted that many residents ration or skip medications due to cost and transportation barriers. Over the next three years, the county plans to increase public awareness of reputable prescription assistance programs to help residents safely afford their medications.
County solid waste facilities pass unannounced state inspection
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — Harvey County's solid waste facilities recently passed a random, unannounced inspection by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment with zero violations. The state agency inspected the transfer station, household hazardous waste facility and construction and demolition site. Harvey County Administrator Kevin Frymire congratulated the solid waste department for maintaining strict compliance during the state's rigorous surprise inspections.
County explores free dirt offer for landfill cover
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — The county is investigating an offer from a local company to provide free dirt, which could be utilized for the Harvey County Landfill's final cap. Solid Waste Director Justin Bland noted that acquiring materials for the eventual final cover is a long-term necessity, regardless of whether the soil is topsoil or clay. Road and Bridge Director Jim Meier is scheduled to inspect the dirt this week to determine if it is suitable for county use.
New Sedgwick fire station to host grand opening next month
HARVEY COUNTY, Kan. — The city of Sedgwick will celebrate the grand opening of its new fire department building on Saturday, Oct. 10. Harvey County Administrator Kevin Frymire announced that Station 31 will host an open house at 8 a.m., coinciding with the city's fall festival and parades. Harvey County commissioners previously attended the groundbreaking for the new emergency response facility earlier this year.
