Council commends unified community response to May 1 corral fire
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - The city council closed its meeting by praising first responders, city staff and volunteers who battled the May 1 corral fire at the Green River Horse Corrals. Council members highlighted actions by the fire and police departments and residents who provided temporary boarding, hay and veterinary triage for displaced horses. Despite the loss of significant personal property and one horse, officials praised the community's response and rapid mobilization.
City explores in-house arborist certification following fire concerns at Scott's Bottom
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - After concerns raised following fire-related issues at Scott's Bottom, questions came up about the city's reliance on state and external arborists to assess damaged and burned trees. A council member suggested some city employees could be trained and certified to handle certain forestry assessments internally. City staff said they would research required qualifications to determine whether cross-training is a viable cost-saving option.
Council member calls for overhaul of "inaccurate" winter sewer billing
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - Council Member Ron Williams criticized the city's current method of calculating winter sewer bills, saying residents who turned on sprinklers early in the spring can be unfairly penalized. Williams argued that averaging water usage over a six-month period can bill residents for lawn water that never enters the sewer system. He called for a transition to a four-month winter average, saying the current approach could raise taxpayers' monthly utility rates.
Rocky Mountain Power franchise agreement nears final approval
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - An ordinance extending the Rocky Mountain Power franchise agreement passed its second reading unanimously. City officials said they were making progress with the utility company on easements and floodplain regulations that had previously slowed negotiations. A revised agreement was sent to the utility company, and the city said it expects to finalize the long-term utility ordinance in the near future.
Illegal dumping plagues landfill areas near town
GREEN RIVER, Wyo. - Illegal dumping at a municipal landfill area and the landfill area near Riverview Cemetery was brought to the city council's attention, with reports of abandoned mattresses, appliances and dead animals. A council member said the refuse pileup may be worsened by the facilities being closed on Sundays and Mondays, leaving residents without a legal dumping option over the weekend. The council member suggested installing after-hours dumpsters to reduce the mess and improve conditions at the municipal sites.
