Council approves $125,000 for Riverview Cemetery expansion design

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — The Green River City Council unanimously approved a $125,000 amendment to a professional services agreement with Steiner Thuesen, PLLC to complete design and engineering for the Riverview Cemetery expansion. Parks and Recreation Director Katie Duncombe noted the cemetery, which opened in 1926, has only 199 full burial plots remaining. Funding from the current budget will push the 6-acre eastward expansion to the 65 percent design stage. Once completed, the project will add more than 1,700 plots and extend the facility's service life for an estimated 50 years.

City re-institutes Historic Preservation Commission

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — Seeking to address issues with the city's aging architecture, the Green River City Council re-instituted the Green River Historic Preservation Commission. The city council unanimously approved the appointments of Budd Allen, Dave Mead, Jane Meiter, Mayor Pete Rust, Amy Stone and Mark Westenskow to the board. City officials said the revived committee will harness the volunteers' ideas and enthusiasm to focus on the preservation and ongoing maintenance of historic buildings within the city.

Council warns residents of impending sewer bill averaging

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — Council members advised residents to turn off their sprinklers to avoid higher utility costs, noting that winter averaging for sewer bills officially begins on Oct. 20. Because municipal sewer charges are calculated based on average water consumption during the winter months, any water used for outdoor landscaping after the cutoff date will artificially inflate residents' monthly sewer rates for the entire following year's billing cycle.

Green River recognized among state's safest cities

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — Green River continues to rank as one of the safest communities in Wyoming, according to a 2026 report by SafeWise using FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data. During a recent meeting, city council members noted that the city placed in the top five safest cities statewide for the current year, maintaining a consistent trend spanning more than five years. Officials publicly commended the Green River Police Department, attributing the high safety ranking to the agency's continuous daily efforts.

Next mayor must fill Specific Purpose Tax board vacancy

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — A seat on the Sweetwater County Specific Purpose Tax board will soon need to be filled by Green River's next mayor. Councilman Gary Killpack announced he will step down from the "sixth penny" tax board at the end of the year to allow the incoming mayor to take the seat, as the position is traditionally reserved for an active mayor. Killpack, who has filled the seat to ensure Green River maintained representation on the joint powers board, directed his comments to Stan Blake and Phillip Stanton, the two mayoral candidates in the audience for the upcoming Nov. 3 general election, noting the new appointee will need to be ready to step into the role for the board's first meeting in January.

City celebrates 30-year career of retiring finance employee

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — The Green River City Council honored a finance department employee for 30 years of service as she prepares for retirement. The employee was recognized for her consistent dedication through decades of technological and organizational changes, including playing a vital role in multiple software transitions. City staff praised the employee for her patience, reliability and for fostering a positive, supportive work environment at City Hall.

Palmer reappointed to Sweetwater County Board of Health

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — The Green River City Council unanimously approved the reappointment of Jason Palmer to the Sweetwater County Board of Health. Palmer, who volunteered to continue his service, will serve an additional four-year term on the regional public health advisory board. His new term will officially begin on Oct. 31, 2026, and will expire on Oct. 31, 2030.

Chamber of Commerce highlights upcoming small business promos and lodging tax

GREEN RIVER, Wyo. — The Green River Chamber of Commerce reminded residents to support local merchants during the upcoming holiday season and to vote on the lodging tax renewal on the Nov. 3 general election ballot. During a presentation to the city council, a chamber representative detailed a robust schedule of upcoming events, including a Holiday Business Showcase on Nov. 20 and 21 and an impending ribbon-cutting ceremony for new community food lockers at the Food Bank of Sweetwater County.
