Council approves zoning for major hospital expansion
GLOBE, Ariz. - The Globe City Council unanimously approved a Planned Area Development (PAD) zoning overlay for Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center, allowing for an increase in maximum building height from 30 feet to 65 feet. This zoning change facilitates the hospital's plan to construct a new three-story, 68,000-square-foot medical office building and relocate its existing helipad. Construction on the project is tentatively scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2026.
Historic Michelson Building renovation approved
GLOBE, Ariz. - Sitting as the Historic Preservation Advisory Commission, the council approved exterior design plans for the renovation of the Michelson Building at 157 S. Broad St. The project, a collaboration between the city and Gila County, will transform the vacant structure into a co-working space branded as "Broadworks." The approved design features historic white paint, a new steel canopy and fabric awnings, aiming to serve as a new anchor for the downtown district.
Hill Street School project wins economic development award
GLOBE, Ariz. - The city was recognized with the 2025 Golden Prospector Award from the Arizona Association for Economic Development for the Hill Street School Apartments project. The project, which converted a historic school into affordable housing, was named the "Economic Development Deal of the Year" in the rural category. Council members praised the development as a model of adaptive reuse that faced initial zoning challenges but ultimately succeeded through council support.
City seeks $4.2 million grant to replace Haskins Bridge
GLOBE, Ariz. - The council authorized the submission of an application to the Arizona Department of Transportation Bridge Formula Program for $4.26 million in funding. If awarded, the grant would cover 100 percent of the costs to fully replace the Haskins Bridge, which is currently closed for repairs. The public works director noted that while current city efforts are focused on reopening the bridge temporarily before the holidays, this funding would secure a permanent replacement structure.
Flood recovery costs mount with sewer and building repairs
GLOBE, Ariz. - During the approval of the consent agenda, the council highlighted significant expenditures related to the Sept. 26 flood event, including a $361,600 payment to Apache Underground Excavating for sewer system repairs and $104,200 to Viking Specialty Services for storm damage to the Silver King building. The city manager stated that the city anticipates 75 percent reimbursement from the state and potentially up to 90 percent if a federal declaration is issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Freeport-McMoRan donates $106,000 for new ladder truck
GLOBE, Ariz. - The council accepted a $106,000 donation from the Freeport-McMoRan Foundation to assist in the purchase of a new articulating ladder truck for the Globe Fire Department. The contribution will be applied directly to the cost of the apparatus, which the fire chief described as a critical tool for the safety of personnel and the community.
Fire department receives grant for smoke detectors
GLOBE, Ariz. - Arizona Complete Health presented a $25,000 check to the Globe Fire Department for the purchase of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The fire chief emphasized the importance of the donation, noting that modern building materials have reduced the time it takes for a fire to reach "flashover" to five minutes or less, making early detection vital for resident safety.
Fire department launches downtown safety inspections
GLOBE, Ariz. - The fire chief updated the council on a new community fire safety strategy focused on the downtown corridor. In the last month, the department conducted 27 business inspections, focusing on education and fire code compliance. The initiative aims to expand from the downtown area to businesses throughout the city to reduce fire risks in commercial properties.
