Council approves nearly $4 million for Pinal Creek remediation

GLOBE, Ariz. — The city council unanimously approved a guaranteed maximum price of nearly $4 million for the Upper Pinal Creek remediation project. The contract, awarded to Tiffany Construction for $3,967,887, is primarily funded through the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Currently, 75 percent of the cost is covered by NRCS sediment removal funds and 25 percent by a city matching fund. However, city officials are pursuing a waiver that could fully fund the multimillion-dollar flood mitigation project entirely through the federal agency.

Multi-agency regional flood mitigation plan gets green light

GLOBE, Ariz. — In a collaborative effort to prevent future flood disasters, the city council unanimously approved an intergovernmental agreement with Gila County and the town of Miami to develop a long-term regional flood mitigation plan. Backed by support from Freeport-McMoRan, the 20- to 30-year planning initiative aims to address a wide range of regional hazards, including post-wildfire flooding, snowstorms and hazardous materials incidents.

Crews to work 40 consecutive days on Pinal Creek cleanup

GLOBE, Ariz. — Tiffany Construction will begin intensive sediment removal in Upper Pinal Creek immediately, with crews scheduled to work 12-hour shifts, seven days a week for the next 40 days. Tiffany Construction General Superintendent Mike Garrison outlined the operational plan, noting that heavy machinery will operate in three separate crews starting from Mesquite Street and U.S. 60 up toward Connie's Bridge. Garrison assured residents that the initial phase will focus solely on debris and sediment removal without impacting existing trees in the channel.

Globe Community Pool draws 4,700 guests in opening weeks

GLOBE, Ariz. — The Globe Community Pool has seen immense popularity since opening on May 22, welcoming approximately 4,700 guests at an average of 250 visitors per day. Pool management reported employing a staff of 40, including 36 certified lifeguards alongside support staff such as leads and cashiers, who handle a packed schedule of open swims, water aerobics and private parties. Officials reminded residents that the facility remains closed on Mondays to allow public works staff to perform essential water quality testing and filtration maintenance.

Annual spring cleanup collects nearly 100 tons of debris

GLOBE, Ariz. — The city's recent "Clean and Beautiful" spring cleanup event successfully removed nearly 100 tons of debris from local neighborhoods. During the three-day event in April, residents disposed of 477 tires, extensive yard waste and between 10,000 and 12,000 pounds of scrap metal. Officials noted the event also fostered community connection, with volunteers from local churches and Waste Connections assisting residents with the cleanup efforts.

City secures $135,800 for library services, eyes future expansion

GLOBE, Ariz. — The city council unanimously approved a fiscal year 2026–2027 library service agreement with the Gila County Library District, securing $135,800 in funding for the city of Globe. The distribution includes an increase from the previous year, which will support ongoing library operations and telephone expenses. Following the approval, council members hinted at potential upcoming discussions regarding the expansion or construction of a new library facility in the coming year.

Emergency waterline repair ratified following highway milling damage

GLOBE, Ariz. — The city council ratified a $38,568 contract with Scholz Contracting LLC for an emergency waterline repair at the intersection of Third Street and Ash Street. The emergency repair was necessitated after city officials said vibrations from an Arizona Department of Transportation overnight milling project damaged a historic water valve, causing it to leak. Taking advantage of the exposed roadway, the city opted to complete a full pipe repair to prevent future issues before ADOT finalized the street paving.

Public works tackles tributary wash maintenance to aid flood prep

GLOBE, Ariz. — While contractors handle the heavy sediment removal in the main channel of Pinal Creek, city public works crews have begun proactive brush-clearing operations in smaller tributary waterways. Officials announced that staff are currently cutting back brush and clearing debris in McMillen Wash and other feeder creeks. This supplementary cleanup ensures that water from tributary channels flows efficiently into the main creek bed, significantly reducing the overall flood risk for the city.
