Pinal Creek cleanup set to begin ahead of monsoon season
GLOBE, Ariz. — City officials anticipate that debris removal and flood mitigation work in Pinal Creek will begin within one to two weeks. During a flood recovery update at Tuesday's Globe City Council meeting, officials noted that while light detection and ranging (LIDAR) flight processing slightly delayed engineering plans, the city is rapidly securing necessary construction easements. An estimated 200 workers will be in the area operating six to seven days a week to clear creek debris ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, before transitioning to bank stabilization efforts along local waterways.
City continues FEMA appeal for flood recovery funds
GLOBE, Ariz. — Globe is actively pursuing an ongoing appeal with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regarding previously denied flood recovery funds. City staff submitted a second extensive request for information to FEMA on Tuesday afternoon, which included video evidence, as-built plans and project receipts. Local leaders maintain they have a strong case for federal qualification and are also awaiting the outcome of state budget negotiations to see if additional flood mitigation funding requested by Gov. Katie Hobbs will be allocated to southern Gila County.
Discounted air ambulance memberships available for residents
GLOBE, Ariz. — While the city will not fund universal air medical memberships this year, Globe residents can secure household coverage through PHI Cares at a steeply discounted rate. Through Aug. 12, city residents can purchase an annual household membership for $30, which covers all out-of-pocket costs for emergency air transports via PHI Air Medical. After the deadline, prices will increase to $95 for residents under 60 and $75 for those 60 and older.
Local arts initiative named finalist for statewide Oonagh Award
GLOBE, Ariz. — The local community organization "Love Where You Live" was named a finalist for the statewide Oonagh Award for its collaborative public art projects. Selected from 29 applicants statewide, the initiative was recognized for bringing together diverse community partners, including the San Carlos Apache Tribe and local businesses, to enact positive change. The award, part of the Arizona Creative Excellence Awards and named for arts advocate Oonagh Boppart, highlights the group's ongoing efforts to enhance downtown Globe and the surrounding Copper Corridor through public engagement, volunteer trail repair and interactive art.
New public art installations and statues slated for Globe
GLOBE, Ariz. — As part of ongoing downtown revitalization efforts, new public art installations are arriving in Globe, including a growing sculpture trail along the Miami Gardens Walking Path near Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center and potential new murals. Representatives from "Love Where You Live" announced plans to install a solar-powered, motion-activated sculpture and are actively seeking seed funding for a life-size bronze statue of Arizona's first governor, George W.P. Hunt, for the downtown district. The organization also proposed establishing a citizen-led, volunteer-driven graffiti abatement group pending future city council approval.
