Council supports redirecting pension tax to fund new fire station

GLOBE, Ariz. - Verbal support was given Tuesday to redirect an existing 0.3 percent public safety sales tax to help fund construction of a new fire station estimated at $13 million to $15 million. The tax, originally implemented in 2016 to aggressively pay down the city's Public Safety Personnel Retirement System unfunded liability, has significantly reduced that pension debt. By redirecting this revenue to cover an estimated $1.2 million in annual bond debt service, city officials said they could finance a modern replacement for the current 100-plus-year-old station without raising taxes on residents. The funding strategy is expected to be incorporated into the upcoming fiscal year budget.

Council hires attorney to navigate Tri-City Fire District relationship

GLOBE, Ariz. - Following an executive session, a unanimous vote was cast to hire Coppersmith Brockelman to represent the city in its inter-jurisdictional relationship with the Tri-City Fire District. Attorney Kathy Steadman, specializing in certificate of necessity issues, will assist the city in communicating and negotiating a more formalized service agreement with the neighboring district.

Council agrees to reduce contingency fund to cover post-flood shortfalls

GLOBE, Ariz. - City staff received approval to reduce the city's $3 million contingency fund to $2.5 million in the upcoming budget to free up $500,000 for critical one-time projects. Staff said the city took a $1 million revenue hit following recent severe flooding, which prevented the standard replenishment of the rainy-day fund. It was agreed that releasing the funds is necessary to stabilize city infrastructure and operations.

Broad Street sidewalk repairs spark ADA compliance discussion

GLOBE, Ariz. - A $21,562 contract awarded for sidewalk repairs at a downtown Broad Street property prompted discussion about accessibility in the downtown corridor. While the immediate contract covers repair of a damaged section of concrete in front of a local business, questions were raised about the feasibility of adding handicap parking and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps nearby. City materials show Globe has adopted current building and fire codes and is addressing accessibility obligations through broader infrastructure planning.

Globe Clean and Beautiful Community Cleanup hauls nearly 100 tons of waste

GLOBE, Ariz. - City staff reported heavy participation in the April 17-19 Globe Clean and Beautiful Community Cleanup event, with residents disposing of nearly 200,000 pounds of mixed waste. The event allowed residents to clear out bulky items, resulting in the collection of hundreds of tires and more than 10,000 pounds of scrap metal.
