SOUTH HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Temperatures are forecast to drop below freezing overnight this weekend. Residents should take the following precautions to protect their homes and families:
Home protection tips:
Drip faucets: Let cold water drip from indoor faucets to prevent pipes from freezing.
Open cabinet doors: Allow warm air to circulate around plumbing, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.
Insulate pipes: Use pipe insulation or towels to wrap exposed pipes in unheated areas like garages or crawl spaces.
Seal drafts: Check windows and doors for drafts and seal them to keep the cold out.
Set thermostat: Keep your thermostat set to the same temperature day and night, no lower than 55 degrees.
Know your shut-off valve: In case of a burst pipe, know how to turn off your water supply quickly.
Additional reminders:
Bring pets indoors.
Check on elderly neighbors or those with limited mobility.
Avoid using open flames or stoves for heating.
