The McPherson County Community Foundation is recruiting volunteers to help prepare tax returns for county residents in 2026 through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

The VITA program provides free tax preparation services primarily to people who make $64,000 or less annually, persons with disabilities, and limited English-speaking taxpayers.

All VITA volunteers who prepare returns must complete and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. The training includes instruction on maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information. In addition to requiring volunteers to certify their knowledge of tax laws, the IRS mandates a quality review check for every return prepared at a VITA site before filing.

The Foundation is seeking volunteers who are current or former financial professionals, current or former accountants, and those who feel comfortable with the tax return process.

MCCF plans to schedule volunteer sessions Monday through Saturday and can be flexible to better fit volunteers' needs. The Foundation asks that volunteers set aside two to three hours per session.

The tax preparation program will operate from February 1 to April 15 each year. An announcement regarding appointment scheduling for taxpayers will be released in January 2026.

Those interested in learning more about the program or volunteering should contact Michelle Huddle, MCCF CEO, at Michelle@McPhersonFoundation.org or call (620) 245-9070.

The VITA program helps ensure that eligible residents receive free, quality tax preparation assistance and can maximize their refunds and tax credits.
