County awards $3.9 million contract for 2026 road resurfacing
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. - A $3,916,638 bid from APAC-Kansas Inc. for the 2026 bituminous surfacing project was approved. The infrastructure project includes a mill and overlay of approximately 11 miles of county roads, specifically targeting sections of Bigalow Road, Jones Avenue and Anderson Road. The project will be funded by pulling $1.5 million from the road and bridge fund, with the remaining balance covered by the special highway fund.
Commission approves $1 million state grant for road repairs
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. - A cost-share agreement with the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) was authorized to help fund the 2026 bituminous surfacing project. Under the state agreement, KDOT will cover 33 percent of the actual construction costs, capped at $1 million, while Finney County will be responsible for the remaining 67 percent. The project's scope was expanded to include Jones Avenue and Anderson Road after those routes suffered significant wear while serving as detour paths during recent railroad crossing work on U.S. Highway 50.
Additional engineering funds approved for new Finney County jail
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. - A $35,100 contract amendment with Kaw Valley Engineering for supplementary surveying and engineering services for the new Finney County jail project was approved. The additional work covers lift station and force main design, as well as supplemental topographic surveying necessary to ensure proper utility infrastructure for the 14-acre site. The amendment will be funded exclusively through a voter-approved 0.5 percent sales tax dedicated to the facility's construction.
New EMS and health building on track for June completion
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. - Construction on the new joint Emergency Medical Services and county health building is progressing on schedule. Interior cabinetry and finishing work are currently underway, with final cleanup anticipated in June before staff begins the official move-in process.

FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. - A 2026-2027 contract for property valuation services was renewed. The contract provides the county appraiser's office with assistance in depreciation studies, market modeling and state compliance without requiring the hiring of additional specialized staff. The contract cost remains unchanged from 2023, providing long-term budget stability for the county.
Finney County Conservation District submits annual budget request
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. - Finney County Conservation District Manager Carmen Rhodes presented the organization's annual budget request, asking to maintain county funding at $35,000. Rhodes said the district has kept its request flat for several years while continuing to provide technical, financial and educational conservation services. The presentation emphasized ongoing local water and soil preservation work alongside federal agencies.
Commission appoints electors to oversee ballot destruction
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. - A Republican elector and a Democratic elector were appointed to witness the state-mandated destruction of old election ballots. Per Kansas statute, ballots from the 2022 general election, 2024 presidential preference primary and older local elections have passed their legal retention periods and are now eligible for disposal. The bipartisan oversight is intended to ensure transparency, accountability and compliance with state election laws.
