County awards bid for juvenile detention center remodel amid rising needs
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Finney County Board of Commissioners approved a $149,400 bid from a contractor to remodel Pod B of the Juvenile Detention Center, converting it from a temporary shelter model back to secure detention housing. While County Maintenance Director Nolan Thill presented the project, county officials noted that juvenile intakes have risen sharply in recent years, a trend expected to accelerate following the July 1 implementation of Kansas House Bill 2329, which mandates stricter detention rules for certain juvenile offenses. The project, which came in nearly $94,000 under the architect's estimate, reflects a necessary operational shift as regional demand for secure juvenile beds increases.
Construction progresses on new Finney County EMS building
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. — During commissioner reports, the board highlighted significant progress on the new Finney County Emergency Medical Services building. Concrete work is now finished, construction fencing has been removed and landscaping is scheduled to begin this week. Operations and construction meetings with Hutton Corporation have officially moved indoors as the facility nears completion, marking a major milestone for the taxpayer-funded public safety project.
Whitetail Crossing final plat approved after water supply review
FINNEY COUNTY, Kan. — Commissioners unanimously approved the final plat for Whitetail Crossing, a 10-lot single-family residential development located in the 10,000 block of North Jenny Barker Road. The project, developed by Thomas Stevenson, faced prior delays as the planning commission requested an affidavit proving a reliable water supply for the eight-to-nine-acre lots. With water quality reports and well volume data from a newly drilled test well now verified, the board moved forward with the approval. The design also features shared driveways to limit traffic impact on the main thoroughfare.
