Union Telephone Company announces infrastructure overhaul

EVANSTON, Wyo. - Ryan Schmidt, director of engineering for Union Telephone Company, presented an update to the Evanston City Council regarding the company's infrastructure improvements. Schmidt reported that the company is sunsetting its legacy 3G network in Evanston to focus exclusively on LTE services and is deploying fiber optics along the Interstate 80 corridor from Arlington to the Utah state line. Schmidt highlighted that the local provider is now offering enterprise-level services for businesses and emphasized that 70 to 80 percent of money spent with the local utility returns to the community, compared to approximately 15 percent from national competitors.

Wyoming Horse Racing to hire over 100 employees

EVANSTON, Wyo. - Wyoming Horse Racing is launching a major hiring initiative, seeking to fill between 100 and 120 positions. A job fair is scheduled for Dec. 22, Dec. 29 and Jan. 5 on the third floor of the Wells Fargo building. Available positions range from food service and security to attendance staff, with wages described as "very competitive" for the local market.

Community mourns death of former Police Chief Bill Logan

EVANSTON, Wyo. - The city council and mayor dedicated a portion of their meeting to mourning the passing of former Police Chief Bill Logan. Council members described Logan as a dedicated public servant who spent decades serving Evanston and Uinta County. Council member Jesse Lind noted a 30-plus-year friendship with Logan, stating the community has lost a figure whose dedication will be difficult to replace.

Special Prosecutor Appointed to Review Domestic Battery Allegations Against Commission Chair

EVANSTON, Wyo. — The Uinta County commissioners voted to authorize Michael Stulken of the Weston County Attorney's Office to act as a special prosecutor for a case involving Commission Chairman Mark Anderson. The motion, requested by Deputy County Attorney Hunter Peterson, passed with votes from Commissioners Eric Southand Brent Hatch. Chairman Anderson recused himself from the vote due to a conflict of interest. The appointment follows Anderson’s arrest on Dec. 5 on suspicion of domestic battery. Because the Uinta County Attorney’s Office serves as legal counsel for the commission, a special prosecutor from outside the county is required to independently review the investigation and determine if formal charges will be filed. Mark Anderson has not been charged in connection with the arrest.

Commission sets E-911 fee at 75 cents per line

EVANSTON, Wyo. — The commission unanimously approved Resolution 25-30, authorizing a monthly E-911 assessment fee on telecommunication lines. As presented by County Clerk Amanda Hutchinson, the fee is set at 75 cents per line per month. The revenue is designated to support the county's emergency dispatch services.
