Council backs new Wyoming Downs racing venue

EVANSTON, Wyo. — The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a letter of support for Wyoming Downs LLC, which plans to build a new historic horse racing and off-track betting facility within city limits. The letter is a required step with the Wyoming Gaming Commission. A company representative estimated the project could generate $2 million to $2.5 million in annual tax revenue for Evanston upon its completion, projected for 2027. Council members raised questions regarding traffic, light pollution and ensuring the project benefits Main Street businesses. The representative said the company is open to community feedback and will address zoning and traffic concerns through the proper channels.

Council members urge voter turnout for 1 percent sales tax

EVANSTON, Wyo. — In their final meeting before the Nov. 4, 2025, special election, several council members urged residents to vote on the proposed 1 percent Specific Purpose Sales and Use Tax, often referred to as the “penny tax.” Councilmember Jesse Lind, a self-described fiscal conservative, voiced support, arguing that unlike federal and state taxes, revenue from this local measure would fund visible, one-time projects. Councilmember Evan Perkes and Mayor Kent Williams also encouraged citizens to participate.

Early voting now open for upcoming election

EVANSTON, Wyo. – City Clerk Diane Harris reminded residents Tuesday that early voting for the upcoming election began that day. Animal shelter to decommission gas euthanasia chamber

EVANSTON, Wyo. — The city will scrap the animal shelter’s aging euthanasia gas chamber after the council declared it excess property Tuesday. Police Chief Michael Vranish reported the machine, in use since at least 2012, is obsolete, parts are no longer available and its continued operation presents a safety risk. Vranish said the change aligns with a statewide trend away from such devices and noted the department is exploring hiring veterinary technicians for professional euthanasia services to ensure the process remains as humane as possible. Councilmember Jennie Hegeman voiced support for providing staff with resources to ease the transition.

State senator announces grant availability for 250th anniversary projects

EVANSTON, Wyo. – Sen. Wendy Schuler addressed the council Tuesday to announce that grant money is now available for cities and nonprofit organizations to fund projects for America’s 250th anniversary, known as the semiquincentennial. After initial grants were awarded to counties, approximately half a million dollars remain in the state fund. Interested organizations can apply at wyoming250.com for projects that align with the celebration’s mission.
