Infrastructure Contract Awarded for Grass Valley Lift Station

EVANSTON — Whitaker Construction has been awarded the contract for the construction of the Grass Valley lift station project. City officials described this phase as the “meat and potatoes” of the overall project, involving the installation of the building, pumps, and generator for the new sewer system. This follows a previous contract that installed the force main line. Council members noted that while Whitaker Construction is a new contractor for the city, the company came recommended by project consultants. The council formally approved the agreement with Whitaker in a subsequent resolution.

Evanston Joins Secondary Opioid Litigation Settlement

EVANSTON — The city has formally agreed to participate in a secondary opioid litigation settlement, which involves various manufacturers beyond the initial Purdue Pharma case. The move allows Evanston to receive a share of settlement funds distributed to Wyoming’s state and local governments. While the exact amount is unknown, the nationwide settlement is reportedly valued at $704 million. During the discussion, a council member expressed his hope that any funds received by the city would be used to support programs for local youth.

Council Questions Large Payment on Water Project

EVANSTON — During the approval of city bills, council members sought clarification on a significant payment of over $650,000 to BH Inc. City staff confirmed the payment was for work related to the city’s water transmission line project. The large expenditure, which was broken down into several charges and included retainage, was the largest single item on the bill register and drew questions from the council before being unanimously approved.

New Mailing Equipment Lease to Save City Money

EVANSTON — A new five-year lease agreement for the city’s postage meter and bulk mailing equipment was approved by the council. The contract with Quadient Leasing USA, Inc. will provide upgraded equipment used for water billing and business licenses. City staff reported that the new agreement is more cost-effective than the previous five-year contract, coming in at a total cost of just over $59,000, compared to over $60,000 for the last term.
