Eight Bullpups Bound for State Wrestling in Salina

Eight McPherson Bullpups have earned their way to the KSHSAA 4A State Wrestling Tournament, set to take place at Tony's Event Center in Salina on February 27th and 28th, where wrestlers from across the state's 4A classification will compete for individual championships.

Girls Wrestling – Augusta Super Regional

The McPherson girls wrestling team traveled to Augusta High School on February 13th and 14th for the 4A Super Regional Tournament, finishing 18th out of 29 teams and qualifying four wrestlers for state.

Junior Heidi Fairchild led the way with a 3-2 tournament record, placing 5th and contributing 13 team points. Fellow junior Amara Dossett also claimed 5th place, going 5-3 on the weekend and adding 12.5 points to the team total.

Lily Vance rounded out the top finishers with a 7th place finish and a 3-2 record, earning 10 team points. Freshman Kara McQueen also punched her ticket to state with an 8th place finish, going 2-3 in the tournament and contributing 8 team points.

Boys Wrestling – Beloit Regional

The Bullpup boys made the trip to Beloit for the 4A Regional Tournament, finishing a strong 7th place out of 16 competing teams and sending four wrestlers to state.

Sophomore Carter Leathers was the standout of the day, going undefeated at 3-0 to claim the Regional Championship and earn 24 team points. The hard-nosed sophomore was the dominant force of the tournament for McPherson.

Sophomore M.J. Burkes was equally impressive, going 3-1 with his only loss coming in the championship match to finish 2nd and contribute 20 team points.

Junior Dylan Hall also reached the championship round before falling, finishing 2nd with a 2-1 record and earning 19.5 points. Junior Noah Garcia rounded out the state qualifiers with a 3rd place finish, going 3-1 on the day for 16 team points.

The Bullpups will look to keep the momentum going when competition begins in Salina on February 27th.
