Downtown Newton gears up for busy summer of retail and art events
Organizers roll out a series of promotions to spur local shopping and fund a new downtown sound system
NEWTON — Local organizers are planning economic activity downtown this summer with a slate of retail and art events, kicking off with the "Duck into Downtown" summer sales on July 2-3.
Participating businesses will hide patriotic ducks for shoppers to find, offering discounts and a grand prize for the luckiest patrons. Choose Newton organizers are asking businesses interested in the promotion to RSVP by June 15 to Main Street Coordinator Jen Lehman. The sales are timed to capitalize on the influx of visitors expected for the city's Independence Day celebrations, encouraging tourists to explore the business district before the holiday festivities begin.
The momentum will continue with the July Third Thursday Art Walk, where storefronts will host art created by children during the Carriage Factory Art Gallery camps, as well as pieces from a local competition. Gallery Director Mary Lee McDonald is currently matching businesses with available artwork to display.
Meanwhile, tickets remain on sale for the annual Wine Walk, which serves as a fundraiser for the Downtown Beautification Fund. Organizers say proceeds from the event will finance the installation of a new downtown sound system later this summer.
The district will also host more than 25 vendors for the Main Street Makers Market on East Sixth Street in June, building on the success of the inaugural May market supported by the Newton Chamber of Commerce.
