DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — The Douglas County Commission joined the City of Lawrence on Wednesday in backing a joint letter to Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland advocating for sustained funding and federal action for Haskell Indian Nations University. Drafted by Commission Chair Shannon Reid and Lawrence Mayor Brad Finkeldei, the letter will also be sent to all Kansas members of Congress and the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs to formally support the institution's students and faculty.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — Following the approval of a joint letter urging federal funding for Haskell Indian Nations University during Wednesday's meeting, Commission Chair Shannon Reid announced plans to draft a separate, targeted letter to the Higher Learning Commission. The forthcoming letter will address the university's ongoing accreditation evaluation, with a decision from the higher education body expected later this fall ahead of a required compliance visit by December 2026.
