DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — The Douglas County Commission approved a temporary business use permit for a construction laydown yard near East 902 Road and North 1464 Road on the west side of Lawrence. The yard, requested by Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, will support the relocation of 2.22 miles of natural gas pipeline due to ongoing Kansas Highway 10 roadwork. The permit is valid from July 27 through Oct. 31, 2026, restricting operations to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — Residents near North 1464 Road expressed apprehension about noise, potential foundation damage and trail safety stemming from the newly approved pipeline laydown yard. County staff mandated that construction traffic use East 902 Road to protect the thinner residential pavement on North 1464 Road, though neighbors remained worried about heavy equipment operating just across the street. Zoning staff noted that any potential structural damage to neighboring homes would be a civil matter between the residents and the pipeline company.
Agritourism permit granted for proposed Highway 40 brewery
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — A proposed brewery received a Tier 2 agritourism permit from the Douglas County Commission to operate a brewery and farm stay on U.S. Highway 40 at a property described as a historic house site. The unanimous approval allows the applicant to cultivate ingredients on-site and offer packaged beer for pickup, with no on-site consumption permitted for the general public in order to mitigate traffic hazards along the busy corridor. The property will require a change-of-use permit to transition an existing 1905 residential accessory building into a commercial brewery space that features a petting zoo and overnight lodging accommodating a maximum of six guests across three bedrooms. The petting zoo and on-site alcohol consumption will be exclusively reserved for farm stay guests, and county staff confirmed they are actively working with the Kansas Department of Transportation to review the site's highway access and ensure entrance safety.
