Turformance Lawn Services site plan approved near North 1800 Road
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — The commission unanimously approved a site plan for Turformance Lawn Services, owned by applicant Dallien Holtkamp, located on 18.5 acres south of North 1800 Road near the Lecompton interchange. The development will feature a roughly 12,000-square-foot new building, employee parking and screened rear exterior storage, which is a permitted accessory use in the light industrial district. Following a request from the commission, Holtkamp also agreed to include pollinator plants and milkweed in the site's landscaping design.
Alternative fire safety cistern required for Turformance Lawn Services
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — During the approval of Turformance Lawn Services, county staff highlighted an unusual application of the local fire code requiring the applicant to install a 4,000-gallon underground water cistern and a 6-inch dry fire hydrant connection. Planners noted the alternative fire suppression system is mandated because the local rural water district lacks the capacity to provide adequate fire protection for the site's commercial group classification.
Commission initiates tax sale process for delinquent properties
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — Commissioners unanimously approved a measure authorizing county attorneys to begin the tax sale process for roughly 113 delinquent properties. Staff noted that while the initial list is large, property owners routinely pay their outstanding taxes during the legal process. A similar list of 120 properties last year ultimately dropped to just eight, which are currently being processed in Douglas County District Court.
Tenant Eviction Defense pilot program rolls out new dashboard
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — The county's newly established Tenant Eviction Defense pilot program has officially launched, accompanied by a new data dashboard. The dashboard will be utilized for the program's intake process, allowing commissioners, staff and the public to track how the eviction defense process is functioning and serving renters across the county.
Commission appoints six to Douglas County Crisis Response Community Advisory Board
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — The commission unanimously appointed six new members to the recently transitioned Douglas County Crisis Response Community Advisory Board. The appointees were vetted and recommended by existing committee members. The new appointees will help guide the county's broad crisis response and mental health systems.
Douglas County Historical Society submits annual report
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — Commissioners formally received the annual report from the Douglas County Historical Society during Wednesday's meeting. The report outlines the organization's yearly activities, preservation efforts and community outreach initiatives focused on maintaining and sharing the area's rich local history.
County highlights World Cup presence in Lawrence
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Kan. — County Administrator Sarah Plinsky highlighted the community's recent publicity surrounding the Algerian national soccer team's stay in Lawrence for the 2026 World Cup.
