County proclaims welcome for Algerian World Cup team

LAWRENCE â The commission issued a formal proclamation welcoming the Algerian national football team, known as the "Desert Warriors," to Douglas County for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The proclamation outlined the county's commitment to providing world-class training facilities, security and hospitality. The statement emphasized the opportunity to foster cultural exchange and global friendship.

Explore Lawrence highlights World Cup preparations

LAWRENCE â Ruth DeWitt, director of community relations for Explore Lawrence, addressed the commission regarding the "Lawrence 2026" committee, a group of roughly 80 to 90 people organizing logistics for the Algerian national team's stay. DeWitt noted that since the announcement, the agency has received positive engagement on social media from Algerians worldwide. The committee presented commissioners with limited edition "Lawrence 2026" scarves as a token of appreciation for the county's support.

Commissioners defer truancy grant to seek school district input

LAWRENCE â The Douglas County Commission voted to defer a grant application to the Kansas Department of Corrections to allow staff time to revise language regarding truancy intervention programs. Commissioners requested that the application be adjusted to use generic language regarding service providers until after county officials meet with local school districts to determine the best approach for handling truancy cases. The revised application is expected to be presented for approval March 11.

Public commenters advocate for mentorship model in truancy

LAWRENCE â During public comment, residents spoke in favor of specific truancy intervention methods. Dr. Irving Kuo, a local psychiatrist and volunteer mentor, urged the commission to support a mentorship-based model rather than standard case management. Kuo argued that the mentorship approach allows for weekly contact with students, families and teachers, resulting in a more comprehensive understanding of the root causes of absenteeism.

Criminal justice services reports high success rates

LAWRENCE â Pam Weigand, director of criminal justice services, reported that the county's juvenile community corrections program achieved an 82 percent success rate over the last year. Weigand noted that the department handled 267 intakes at the assessment center and 164 diversions through the immediate intervention program, utilizing a budget of over $5 million largely funded by Kansas Department of Corrections grants.

Lawrence Community Shelter submits annual report

LAWRENCE â The Lawrence Community Shelter submitted its 2025 annual report to the board, which County Administrator Sarah Plinsky highlighted as a resource for data related to the "A Place for Everyone" housing initiative. The report details shelter operations and trends in local homelessness, providing commissioners with updated metrics to inform future policy decisions.

Property appraisal notices mailed this week

LAWRENCE â County Administrator Sarah Plinsky announced that appraisal notices regarding changes in property value for 2026 are being mailed to property owners this week. These notices inform residents of the county's assessment of their property's market value, a key factor in calculating property taxes for the upcoming year.
