County to consider revoking Hope Ridge Wind Project permit

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - The Dickinson County Commission received a formal letter from Enel Green Power, the project developer, requesting the revocation of the project's conditional use permit for the Hope Ridge Wind Project. County Administrator Janelle Dockendorf presented the March 30 letter to the board, noting that legal counsel is currently drafting a formal resolution to rescind the previously approved project. Commissioners plan to formally vote on the revocation during next week's regular agenda.

County officials confirm new northern residents are following tax and zoning laws

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - County Appraiser Lisa Berg and Planning and Zoning Director Tim Hamilton addressed growing constituent concerns regarding a new Amish community moving into the northern part of the county. Both officials confirmed that the new residents are legally pulling building permits and that their properties are being properly assessed and taxed according to state statutes. The zoning department noted it has issued about two dozen permits for the community over the past five years, while the appraiser's office clarified that homes built without modern utilities are legally valued at a lower market rate and no tax exemptions for religious or educational uses have been requested or granted.

Historical society billboard approved north of Elmo

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - The commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit allowing the Dickinson County Historical Society to construct a 200-square-foot off-site advertising billboard one mile north of Elmo on K-15. The non-digital sign will promote local tourism attractions including the Dickinson County Heritage Center and the C.W. Parker Carousel. The permit's approval is contingent upon the applicant receiving final location consent and permitting from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

County appraiser reports estimated 3 percent increase in real estate values

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - Real estate values in Dickinson County are projected to increase by approximately 3 percent this year, according to preliminary ratio study results presented by the Dickinson County Appraiser's Office. The office also announced the start of the 2027 parcel maintenance inspection cycle, which will review roughly 2,800 parcels beginning in the southwest part of the county and extending through several communities. To ensure consistent valuations, appraisers have developed a new internal field book and ranking manual to standardize data collection and property quality assessments.

County considers donating tax sale property to Herington Land Bank

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - The county is exploring the donation of an unused, county-owned lot to the Herington Land Bank to eliminate ongoing chemical mowing and maintenance costs. The property, located at the southwest corner of North E Street in Herington, has been held by the county for more than 10 years after going unsold at a past tax sale. If the Herington Land Bank board formally accepts the request, the Dickinson County Commission will draft a resolution to declare the lot surplus property and officially transfer the deed.

Commissioners review structural steel bids for county road project

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - Commissioners reviewed bids from Husker Steel and Welborn Sales for structural steel and decking for a county road project totaling nearly $39,000 in materials. The board will officially vote on the bids at the April 9 meeting.

Bridge replacement closes county road site for 120 days

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - County Administrator Janelle Dockendorf reminded residents that the bridge located in the 1100 block of 1100 Avenue between Indy and Jeep Road is officially closed for replacement. The public works project is expected to take 120 working days to complete. Public works crews have also been temporarily delayed in spraying for noxious weeds due to recent rain.

Future county support for local marathon road safety in question

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - Commissioners briefly debated the future of the county's public works support for the Eisenhower Marathon. While the county will continue to provide road safety and barricade setups for this year's race, officials noted that they had previously decided to halt the service because the route utilizes a state highway. The commission plans to hold a discussion following this year's event to determine if they will fully pull public works support for the marathon in 2027.

County seeking quotes for health department HVAC replacement

DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. - The county is requesting quotes to replace a failing, 20-year-old heating, ventilation and air conditioning system at the Dickinson County Health Department and emergency medical services facility. County Administrator Janelle Dockendorf reported that the aging system has required increasing maintenance and repairs, making replacement the most cost-effective option. Funding for the new system will be drawn from the county's capital outlay fund, with bids expected to be presented to the commission in the coming weeks.
