Credit union adds financial, marketing chiefs to executive team

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Heartland Credit Union has hired two seasoned executives to strengthen its leadership team as the financial institution continues expanding its operations and member services.
Kevin Hess joined as chief financial officer and Trace Hughes was named vice president of brand and marketing, the credit union announced.
The appointments represent a strategic investment in the organization's growth plans and operational capabilities.
Hess brings more than 25 years of financial experience to his new role overseeing accounting, budgeting, forecasting and investment strategy. The Hutchinson native previously served as vice president and CFO at OCCK Inc. in Salina and held executive positions with The Kroger Company and Kwik Shop.
He also led TECH Inc., a developmental disability support provider in Hutchinson, as president and CEO.
"What drew me to Heartland Credit Union was the clear alignment between the organization's values and my own," Hess said. "Heartland's culture stood out to me as one that values learning and shared success."
A Kansas State University graduate with degrees in accounting and management, Hess will focus on enhancing internal procedures to support the credit union's continued expansion.
Dan Springer, president and CEO of Heartland Credit Union, said Hess brings both financial expertise and community-focused leadership.
"His leadership style and values reflect the culture we're proud of at Heartland, and I'm confident he'll make a lasting impact on our team and our members," Springer said.
Hughes will oversee brand identity and marketing efforts across digital and traditional platforms. His responsibilities include member retention campaigns, public relations and community engagement.
The Air Force veteran served as a staff sergeant in Air Battle Management Operations and deployed overseas during Operation Enduring Freedom. He holds a bachelor's degree in communication with an emphasis in integrated marketing from Wichita State University.
Hughes previously worked in senior creative roles at major firms including Deloitte, Idea Ranch, VML and BarkleyOKRP on campaigns for national and regional brands.
"I'm beyond honored to join Heartland with its rich legacy of service, trust, and community," Hughes said. "I look forward to deepening our connection with members, expanding our reach, and building a brand that reflects the heart of Kansas."
Michelle Waln, chief culture officer at Heartland Credit Union, said Hughes combines strategic thinking with creative talent.
"His leadership will help us share our story in meaningful ways and strengthen our brand at every member touchpoint," Waln said.
The executive additions come as Heartland Credit Union continues investing in operational improvements and member-focused growth initiatives.
