Commission approves $25,000 to save public transit route

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kan. — The county commission approved a $25,000 allocation from its operating reserve to help fund a SEK-CAP public transportation route. SEK-CAP Community Engagement Coordinator Casey Brown told the commission the transit service faced further reductions to a single route running a day and a half per week without additional local matching funds. The $25,000, combined with existing elderly account funds, will secure a $95,000 state and federal match to maintain one full-time, door-to-door route through June 30, 2027.

Storm siren grant delayed; county seeks backup plan for expiring ARPA funds

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kan. — A pending Federal Emergency Management Agency grant to upgrade storm sirens is facing delays, prompting the county to seek a backup plan for expiring American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. Crawford County Communications Director Tim Mikrut, advising on the multi-community project, warned against altering the current grant application to spend $40,000 in ARPA money, noting it could jeopardize the entire project. The commission directed that an area outside the grant's scope be identified to purchase and install a standalone siren using the ARPA funds before they expire.

County reminds residents of free dump day amid illegal dumping rise

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kan. — In response to a recent increase in illegal roadside dumping, the county issued a reminder that all residents are entitled to one free dump day per month at the Crawford County Landfill. Residents must secure and tarp their loads and provide their license plate number at the facility. Officials emphasized that utilizing the free service prevents the county from having to dispatch road crews to clean up discarded items, such as couches, left on public roadways.
