County to install traffic counters to monitor heavy semi-truck route
CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kan. — Crawford County announced the installation of traffic counters on two county roads — 200th Street and 590th Avenue — to monitor a recent influx of semi-truck traffic. Officials suspect GPS navigation apps, such as Google Maps, are routing heavy commercial trucks onto county roads as a bypass around Girard. The data collected by the counters will help the county determine if alternate routing or restrictions are necessary to preserve the roadways and address residents' complaints.

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kan. — The county is moving forward with plans to purchase one or two new storm sirens using American Rescue Plan Act funds before the Dec. 31 spending deadline. County officials expressed frustration over delays with a separate federal grant and agreed to invite Crawford County Emergency Management Director Quinton Parsons and local emergency management officials to their next meeting to finalize a purchase. Officials estimate the sirens will cost between $32,000 and $33,000 each, and the county aims to act quickly rather than risk losing the remaining federal relief money.
