Cowley County Proclaims June 15-21 as Men's Health Week

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Cowley County Board of County Commissioners has proclaimed June 15-21, 2026, as Men's Health Week in Cowley County, encouraging men and boys in the community to prioritize their health through regular check-ups, healthy habits and open conversations about physical and mental well-being.

The proclamation, signed April 7 by Board Chairman Jim Maxwell, Vice Chairman Alan Groom and Commissioner Wayne Wilt, notes that men nationwide have a life expectancy approximately six years shorter than that of women and experience higher rates of chronic disease, including diabetes, obesity, cancer, heart disease and premature mortality.

The proclamation also cited the growing epidemic of "Deaths of Despair," including deaths related to suicide, substance use disorders, alcohol misuse and homelessness, underscoring the need to raise awareness of unrecognized and undiagnosed depression, mental stress and emotional distress among men and boys.

Men's Health Week is a special awareness period passed by Congress and signed into law May 31, 1994, and is observed annually through the efforts of Men's Health Network to build health empathy, recognition and understanding of the unique health needs facing men and boys.

The county encouraged all citizens to observe the week by promoting awareness of men's health issues, supporting preventative care and taking steps toward healthier lifestyles.
