1. Commissioners discuss budget reductions for fiscal 2027

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Cowley County Commission discussed reducing spending as part of its fiscal 2027 budget planning during the June 16 meeting. County Administrator Lucas Goff reminded commissioners of their previously stated goal to significantly reduce spending while finalizing the upcoming budget. The proposed cuts are part of an ongoing effort to lower the tax burden on Arkansas City and Cowley County residents without disrupting essential local services.

2. Summer budget hearing planned later this summer

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — Arkansas City area residents are expected to have an opportunity later this summer to weigh in on the proposed fiscal 2027 budget. The Cowley County Commission discussed a public budget hearing that would give taxpayers a forum to discuss the local government's plans to maintain a revenue-neutral rate and reduce expenditures.

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Cowley County Commission unanimously approved an amendment to its interagency agreement with the Kansas Department for Children and Families to increase state reimbursements for Child in Need of Care legal representation. Cowley County originally set a $30,000 ceiling for reimbursable expenses but was on track to exceed that limit. The approved amendment raises the maximum reimbursement to $50,000, helping the county cover legal costs.
