Commissioners reject $3.4 million fire station proposal

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Cowley County Commission firmly rejected a preliminary $3.4 million proposal for a new rural fire station in Atlanta during Tuesday's meeting. Commissioners balked at the price tag for the proposed Community Development Block Grant project for Rural Fire District 2. The board indicated they would only support the grant application if the total facility design is capped at $1 million, with the county's financial contribution not exceeding $250,000.

County administrator proposes consolidating rural fire districts

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — Faced with escalating operational costs and aging facilities, County Administrator Lucas Goff suggested the commission consider consolidating the county's rural fire districts. Goff noted that smaller departments handle a low volume of calls within their actual taxing districts. Commissioners expressed support for exploring consolidation, suggesting that combining districts could centralize equipment and reduce the financial burden on taxpayers.

Commission targets $1 million in cuts for 2027 budget

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — Cowley County operations will likely see a reduction as commissioners push to cut at least $1 million from the upcoming 2027 budget. The mandate was highlighted during debates over rural fire department funding, with Administrator Lucas Goff reminding the board that any new financial commitments must be weighed against their goal of significant budget reductions. The push for cuts comes as local governments brace for new state legislation that caps property tax levies without voter approval.

County approves $45,000 chemical herbicide purchase

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — The commission unanimously approved the purchase of chemical herbicides for county use in 2026, with costs not to exceed $45,561.10. County Noxious Weeds Director Eric Neal presented a split-bid strategy, purchasing chemicals from both Van Diest Supply Company and Nutrien Ag Solutions. The department will order specific products based on the lowest individual price between the two companies, while also factoring in Van Diest's ability to provide next-day delivery for time-sensitive spraying before weather fronts arrive.

Private landowner herbicide cost-share program renewed

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — Local property owners will continue to receive financial assistance for agricultural weed control following the approval of the 2026 cost-share program. Under the initiative, Cowley County will cover 25 percent of the average cost of approved chemical herbicides for private landowners. The board unanimously approved the program, which utilizes averaged pricing from local vendors to set the county's financial contribution per unit.
