Cowley County Commission approves $89,500 software purchase for Cowley County Sheriff's Office
COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Cowley County Commission unanimously approved the purchase of Motorola Solutions Spillman Flex mobile software for the Cowley County Sheriff's Office for an amount not to exceed $89,538.81. The software ensures compliance with new state guidelines that mandate sensitive personal information — such as dates of birth and Social Security numbers — be transmitted via encrypted computer channels rather than open radio airways. The initial purchase, funded through a special equipment fund, is accompanied by ongoing maintenance fees of $4,902.08 for years two through five, which will increase to $5,098.91 in year six.
Cowley County retains Foulston Law Office to intervene in Evergy Buffalo Flats case
COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — Cowley County Commissioners voted to engage Foulston Law Office for a retainer not to exceed $15,000 to represent local interests regarding the proposed Evergy Buffalo Flats transmission lines. The legal representation will allow the county to officially intervene in upcoming Kansas Corporation Commission hearings. During testimony, concerns were raised regarding the potential for the heavy transmission towers to cause severe damage to local road infrastructure, as well as fears of permanent ecological destruction to the region's uninterrupted tallgrass prairie.
Dispute over Cedar Township road right-of-way prompts formal review
COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — The Cowley County Commission heard competing arguments regarding a section of 272nd Road in Cedar Township. According to Cedar Township representatives, a landowner — who was not identified by name during the public meeting — claims to have gated and privately maintained the section for 10 years. Cedar Township representatives requested the county formally reopen the road, citing historic 1951 records and stating it is the only legal access to an adjoining 160-acre parcel. Cowley County Administrator Lucas Goff confirmed that records show no official vacation of the road and stated Cowley County Counselor Lucy Herlocker will initiate a formal review process to determine the right-of-way's legal status.
Lakewynds area flooding concerns meeting to be rescheduled
COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. — A meeting regarding Lakewynds area flooding concerns originally scheduled for Friday has been postponed. Cowley County Administrator Lucas Goff informed the Cowley County Commission that scheduling conflicts among Lakewynds Drainage District and Lakewynds Homeowners Association representatives necessitated the change. The county plans to reschedule the event as an evening meeting within the next two weeks to allow for better community attendance and to review factual information regarding the ongoing flooding issues.
