Cowboys, Cowgirls Compete for $51,948 at 88th Annual Pretty Prairie Rodeo

PRETTY PRAIRIE, Kan. — JR Stratford rode his way to victory in bull riding at the 88th Annual Pretty Prairie Rodeo, scoring 87.5 points on Beutler & Son Rodeo's Fake Friend to earn $1,841 and top the field at Kansas' largest night rodeo.

The four-day event, which concluded Saturday, drew thousands of spectators from around the world to the small Kansas town and featured a total payoff of $51,948 across all events.

Blaine Kaufman dominated the bareback riding competition with an 86.5-point ride on Buttercup, earning $1,610. In saddle bronc riding, Isaac Richard captured first place with 83 points on Red Wings, taking home $1,849.

The steer wrestling average went to Laine Herl, who completed two head in a combined 11.9 seconds to earn $1,483. Herl tied for first in the second round with Wyatt Johnson, both clocking 4.5 seconds.

Team ropers Jhett Trenary and Gralyn Elkins dominated their event with a 4.8-second run, earning $1,505 each. The duo outpaced the field by six-tenths of a second over second-place finishers Ryon Joe Boatright and Kingston Chang.

In tie-down roping, Hagen Houck captured the victory with an 8.0-second run worth $1,838, narrowly defeating Denton Oestmann's 8.2-second effort.

Suzanne Brooks claimed the barrel racing title by just one-hundredth of a second, posting a time of 17.05 seconds to earn $1,589. Tamara Reinhardt finished second at 17.06 seconds.

The event featured stock from Beutler & Son Rodeo, with officials Roddy Coquat, Buddy Reynolds and DeWitt Forrest Jr. overseeing competition. Randy Corley served as announcer, while specialty acts included John Payne and Justin Rumford.

Now in its 89th year, the Pretty Prairie Rodeo is operated entirely by volunteers and raises funds for local scholarships, the food bank, 4-H clubs, emergency medical services and other community organizations.
