County allocates nearly $100,000 to tackle addiction among high-risk offenders
Opioid settlement and alcohol tax funds will support a new full-time care coordinator and prevention programs
HUTCHINSON, Kan. — High-risk offenders and recently incarcerated individuals in Reno County will receive increased support for substance abuse recovery after commissioners voted unanimously to direct $98,502 toward local treatment and prevention programs.
The commission approved $78,502 in opioid settlement funds alongside a $20,000 allocation from the county's special alcohol and drug fund. Horizons Mental Health Center is set to receive $63,502 to launch an education and prevention program targeting recently incarcerated individuals.
The remaining $35,000 will fund a full-time care coordinator position at Reno County Community Corrections. The coordinator will help individuals secure housing, employment and transportation — addressing basic life barriers that can derail recovery.
Community Corrections Director Randy Regehr told commissioners the funding addresses a critical need within the local justice system. He said 72% of the agency's currently supervised individuals have a drug- or alcohol-related offense, and more than a third test positive for illegal substances at their initial appointment.
