Board narrowly approves constable salaries amid workload debate

COCONINO COUNTY, Ariz. — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors approved salaries for local constables in a 3-2 vote on Tuesday, keeping the Williams precinct constable salary at $16,000 and the Flagstaff precinct constable, Danny Thomas, at $55,000 annually for the next four-year term. A proposed raise to $26,000 for the Williams precinct, currently held by Constable Gregory King, was advocated for based on 1,168 hours worked last year and additional duties like traffic control and assisting local deputies across a 7,000-square-mile area. However, administrators noted salaries are constrained by a state statutory formula based strictly on precinct population and the number of legal documents successfully served. Dissenting arguments during the meeting highlighted that the rigid state formula fails to compensate constables fairly for unserved attempts and necessary public safety duties.

Sheriff's office secures grant extension for regional K-9 training facility

COCONINO COUNTY, Ariz. — The Coconino County Sheriff's Office will receive an extension on an Arizona Department of Public Safety local border support grant through Dec. 31, 2026, to finalize a regional K-9 training area. The dedicated facility will be located behind the search and rescue building, moving the working dogs away from the hazards of the active emergency response parking lot. It was clarified to the Board of Supervisors that while the grant involves border support funding, local K-9 units are utilized strictly for drug trafficking and human smuggling interdiction, not for immigration enforcement.

Board approves flood warning system upgrades before monsoon season

COCONINO COUNTY, Ariz. — Acting as the Coconino County Flood Control District, the Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a contract modification with J.E. Fuller Hydrology to upgrade the local post-wildfire flood warning system ahead of the upcoming monsoon season. The modification includes a new indemnification clause after the contractor raised liability concerns regarding a lack of state immunity for private vendors. Officials noted the 16-year-old warning system experienced critical overloads last summer — reaching up to 4,000 public website hits per minute — which disrupted the flood director's access to real-time data. A newly separated, dedicated network will ensure emergency personnel can monitor rain gauges and order evacuations without public bandwidth interference.

Red Lake property approved for five-acre residential zoning

COCONINO COUNTY, Ariz. — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a zoning change for a 25.8-acre parcel in Red Lake, shifting the land from a 10-acre general minimum to a five-acre agricultural residential minimum. The zone change will allow the property owners, Harry and Sonja Smith, to subdivide the land into five separate parcels for their children. Community Development Director Jay Christelman noted the subdivision aligns with the rural character of the Red Lake Area Plan and received no public opposition.
