FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — A Coconino County Detention Facility expansion and remodel project is running ahead of schedule, Coconino County Sheriff Bret Axlund reported to the board of supervisors. The project, operating with a previously approved budget of approximately $2.9 million for the medical and intake unit expansion, includes a new medical facility and improvements to intake, transfer and release areas intended to improve safety and operations. County officials did not outline the exact original timeline during the update but said both phases are now expected to be completed earlier than originally projected.
Board tables flood control system contract modification pending legal review
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to table a contract modification involving indemnification for J.E. Fuller Hydrology and Geomorphology, the contractor managing the county's post-wildfire flood warning system. Flood Control District Administrator Lucinda Andreani said state law protecting local governments from liability does not explicitly cover contracted agents. The supervisors requested additional legal clarification and tabled the item until their June 2 meeting as the county works to keep the system operational ahead of monsoon season.
Sen. Gallego advances Bellemont traffic interchange study request
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — County Government Affairs staff announced that U.S. Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., has backed a funding request for a Bellemont traffic interchange study. Staff said the request would next move through the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, where transportation funding remains highly competitive. The county also expects support from U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly, D-Ariz.
County receives clean bill of financial health in fiscal year 2025 audit
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Coconino County received an unmodified, or clean, opinion on its fiscal year 2025 financial audit, the highest level of assurance provided by an independent auditor. Representatives from the Arizona Auditor General's Office and CliftonLarsonAllen LLP reported no instances of noncompliance required to be reported under Government Auditing Standards, though the audit identified one significant deficiency in internal controls related to IT network change approvals. County officials said the issue has been addressed through additional change management training.
County prepares to adopt 2024 building codes
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The county's Community Development Department presented final recommendations on adopting the 2024 International Code Council suite of building codes. Staff said the proposal attempts to balance energy efficiency goals with housing affordability concerns. A formal public hearing and adoption vote are scheduled for June 2.
County forced to scale back Opportunity Zone recommendations
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Federal changes to the Opportunity Zone program will require Coconino County to narrow its recommendations for eligible investment areas, the County Manager's office told the board of supervisors. County staff said the county must submit its recommendation to the governor's office by June 1. The board is expected to hold a focused work session to finalize its selections.
Board backs walk-through winter attraction at Fort Tuthill
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors signaled support for a public-private partnership with Three Peaks Entertainment LLC to launch a winter-themed attraction at Fort Tuthill County Park. County staff said Three Peaks was the highest-ranking proposer under request for proposals 2026-108. The proposal calls for a walk-through attraction at the park.
Board approves funding to bring Shakespeare to senior centers
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors approved $7,350 in community initiative funding to support the Flagstaff Shakespeare Festival's senior outreach program. The funding agreement supports the festival's "Shakes" Senior Program, which brings adapted performances to older residents in county facilities and care settings.
Supervisors honor Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel centennial
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The Coconino County Board of Supervisors issued a proclamation celebrating the centennial of Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel in Flagstaff. The proclamation coincides with a Mass and fiesta scheduled for May 16, 2026, honoring the chapel's long-standing cultural and community significance.
