HUTCHINSON, Kan. — The city of Hutchinson is taking precautionary measures to divert water away from Cow Creek as increased flows are expected to move into the area.

According to a city news release, staff are closing control structures to route the water around Hutchinson rather than through the city center. Officials said residents will likely notice lower water levels in local waterways as diversion operations take effect. No timeframe was immediately provided for when the high flows are expected to arrive or when the closure of control structures began.

The city noted the lower water levels are an expected outcome of the bypass process and should not cause further impacts to the community. City staff will continue to monitor incoming flows and adjust control structures as needed.
