City advances $8.25 million privately funded Sunset Zoo expansion
Next phase of the zoo's master plan includes new lemur and bobcat habitats
MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Manhattan City Commission unanimously authorized a search for a construction manager to oversee an $8.25 million expansion at Sunset Zoo, according to commission meeting records.
The Phase 2 expansion is fully funded by the Sunset Zoological Park and Wildlife Conservation Trust. Planned additions include a ring-tailed lemur exhibit, an interactive barnyard featuring agricultural animals and a "Trail of Americas" exhibit that will house a bobcat habitat.
The city will issue a request for qualifications and proposals for a construction manager at risk, a process expected to conclude with a final recommendation to the commission by early June. The project marks the next major step in the zoo's four-phase master plan.
