Case Findings in Fatal Shooting Expected Within 30 Days

MCPHERSON COUNTY, Kan. — Investigators aim to send case findings to McPherson County Attorney Jennifer Wyatt for charging decisions within 30 days in the Jan. 31 fatal shooting of 19-year-old Joshua Soden, who was shot during a confrontation on a rural road after partygoers consuming alcohol left a house party in separate vehicles, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The 18-year-old suspected shooter was detained for questioning after calling 911 and driving to the Inman Police Department but has since been released and has not been arrested. Sheriff Jerry Montagne told county commissioners he was limited in what he could discuss due to the active investigation.

An autopsy has been completed on Soden, with final results including toxicology expected in approximately six to 12 weeks, KBI Communications Director Melissa Underwood said. The KBI and Crime Scene Response Team documented the scene, obtained evidence and conducted multiple witness interviews. Digital evidence will also be examined as part of the ongoing probe.

Meanwhile, the KBI is asking anyone who has not yet been interviewed and may have relevant information about the incident to call 1-800-KS-CRIME.
