Bullpups grind through tough boys varsity tennis invite

HESSTON, Kan. — The McPherson boys varsity tennis team finished fifth out of 16 teams with 97 points at the Hesston Invitational Saturday, trailing champion Wichita Collegiate (164), Hesston (126), Central Plains (114) and El Dorado (98) in the final standings.

The tournament was marked by prolonged delays between matches — at times stretching nearly two hours — pushing play well past sunset and forcing both McPherson doubles teams to complete their final matches under the lights at Bethel College.

Singles players Rylan Unruh and Cooper Bohme were bright spots in an otherwise difficult day, combining for a 7-3 record; Unruh rebounded from a quarterfinal loss to finish 3-2 and claim seventh place, while Bohme bounced back from an early setback to win the consolation bracket championship and ninth place at 4-1.

The doubles teams of Mason Eisenbarth and Jonas Emery (13th, 3-2) and Hayden Siemens and Jack Boese (16th, 1-4) struggled to find their rhythm amid the extended waits and fading conditions, but coach noted the day tested the squad's patience and mental toughness in ways that could prove valuable as the season progresses.
