WICHITA, Kan. — The McPherson Bullpups varsity girls tennis team claimed the AVCTL 3&4 League championship Saturday, finishing with 55 points to edge Wichita Collegiate (50), Buhler (40) and Wellington (40) in a marathon day that began before dawn and ended under the lights at Genesis Rock Road after Collegiate High School's courts went dark.

The doubles tandem of Mayson Wiens and Lleyton Kuhn headlined the effort, going 4-0 to win the league title and defeating teammates Avery Unruh and Quinn Liebl — seeded first entering the day — 7-5, 6-1 in an all-McPherson championship match. Unruh and Liebl finished second, giving the Bullpups a 1-2 sweep. In singles, Dragon Rodriguez went 3-1 to finish fifth and McKenna Paul went 2-2 to finish sixth, with both holding their respective seeds in a competitive field.

"When you have two of your own teams playing for a championship, as a coach you can pretty much sit back and enjoy it," the McPherson coach said. "You know your team is walking away with first and second, and you get to watch four of your own girls compete for a League championship." The Bullpups now turn their attention to hosting Regionals on Friday.
