WICHITA, Kan. — The McPherson Bullpups varsity girls tennis team finished eighth out of 16 schools with 71 points Saturday at the Tournament of Champions, hosted by Wichita Collegiate, in a field that included programs from multiple classifications across Kansas. The day was complicated by heavy rain that pushed back the start more than three hours, but the Bullpups went a combined 12-8 across four entries, with the No. 1 doubles team of Quinn Liebl and Avery Unruh leading the way at 4-1 and finishing ninth — capping their day with an 8-2 victory over Independence's top doubles pair — while singles players Mayson Wiens (3-2, 10th) and McKenna Paul (3-2, 19th) each posted winning records against a field stacked with 4A and 5A competition. "In a field this deep, you're hoping to get through the day around .500 or better, and every one of our girls was able to do that while also picking up some important wins along the way," the coach said, noting the squad faces a quick turnaround with tournaments at Maize on Monday and Goddard on Tuesday before league play the following week and Regionals on the horizon.
