Bullpups Fall to Augusta in High-Scoring Affair

MCPHERSON — The McPherson Bullpups suffered just their second loss ever to Augusta on Friday night, falling 50-29 in a high-scoring contest that saw the Orioles rack up 505 total yards, the most allowed by McPherson this season.

The Bullpups struck first on their opening drive when quarterback Carter Bengtson connected with receiver Ashton Malm on a 34-yard touchdown pass. Augusta answered immediately with an 80-yard scoring strike from QB Brody Haskell to Brecken Albert to knot the game at seven. McPherson responded with an 82-yard bomb from Bengtson to Malm to tie the game again, but the Orioles took control in the second half, scoring 10 unanswered points to build a commanding 44-14 lead. Running back Dane Becker provided a late bright spot with a one-yard touchdown run with 10:28 remaining, the Bullpups' first score since the opening quarter. Malm continued his dominant junior campaign with 184 receiving yards on nine catches and two touchdowns, while Becker led the ground game with 60 rushing yards on 15 carries. McPherson finished with 420 total yards but couldn't overcome Augusta's explosive offensive performance. The Bullpups will look to rebound on Senior Night when they host rival Buhler on Friday, October 24th.
