The McPherson boys soccer team enters the 2025 season with high expectations and the pieces in place to make a deep postseason run. After falling in last year's Regional Final to the eventual state champions, the Bullpups return a talented core ready to take the next step.

"Last year we competed right there with the two teams playing in the state championship game," said head coach Adrian. "Our goal is to make that next jump and the boys believe it's possible if we work hard and play together."

Despite a 9-8-1 record last season, the Bullpups' strength of schedule prepared them for a playoff push. This year's team spent the summer building on that foundation through camps at Central College, weekly summer league games, and competitions against top Wichita programs.

Leading the charge is Manny Morales, who coach Adrian expects to be "one of the best players in Kansas this year" after an impressive offseason. In goal, Gabe Standfast returns as a candidate for 4A Goalkeeper of the Year honors. "He is a monster in the goal and we will definitely lean on him and our defense at times," Adrian noted.

The Bullpups' attack gets a boost with Ben Bocox's move from defense to forward. His speed and relentless effort bring what Adrian calls "controlled chaos" to the offensive end. Midfielders Jackson Martin and Yahir Valadez will provide creativity and ball control, while an experienced defensive unit featuring Mason Eisenbarth, Dmitry Peters, Grayson Broadus, Daniel Bowen, and Beckett Schuckman anchors the back line.

McPherson faces another gauntlet schedule, with 5A powers Salina South, Hutchinson, Andover Central, and Maize South all on the slate. In 4A competition, state runner-up Rose Hill remains the team to beat in league play, while the rivalry match with Buhler always provides fireworks.

"Our schedule doesn't provide many nights where our best isn't required and we like that," Adrian said. The team embraces playing "like PUPS" - emphasizing unity, perseverance, and success while striving to play harder than every opponent. With fewer defensive goals a priority after last year's young back line gained valuable experience, this could be the year McPherson breaks through to state.
