Boys Varsity Tennis Hosts Doug Gayer Classic
McPherson Red finishes runner-up behind Independence at annual invitational tournament.
MCPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson boys varsity tennis program hosted the 2026 Doug Gayer Classic at McPherson High School, with Team Red finishing as runner-up with 46 points, just three behind 4A powerhouse Independence's 49 in a field of 11 teams spanning three classifications. Rylan Unruh led Team Red with a 3-1 record and a fifth-place singles finish, while the doubles team of Mason Eisenbarth and Jonas Emery earned a third-place finish at 3-1.
Maize (43), El Dorado (38) and Manhattan (36) rounded out the top five in the 22-player singles and 19-team doubles tournament, while McPherson White finished eighth with eight points as younger players gained experience against strong competition.
