Facade improvement grant deadline extended for Ellinwood and Hoisington
BARTON COUNTY, Kan. — The Barton County Commission extended the application deadline for the 2026 Facade Improvement Grant to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14. County Administrator Matt Patzner announced the extension is specifically aimed at businesses and property owners in Ellinwood and Hoisington. Officials granted the extension to allow contractors additional time to return project bids so business owners can submit complete applications.
Grant funding maxed out for remaining cities
BARTON COUNTY, Kan. — While Ellinwood and Hoisington received an extension for the Facade Improvement Grant, funding is already accounted for in the county's other two major cities, Claflin and Great Bend. It was noted that enough applications have already been received from those two cities to meet or exceed the available allotted funds for the year, effectively closing the program in those areas.

Local officials announced ongoing collaboration with state lawmakers to draft a bill that would apply a small fee — potentially $1.50 to $2 — to tickets for events like Kansas City Chiefs games, Kansas City Royals games and college sporting events. The generated revenue would be directed strictly toward property tax relief for Kansas residents rather than being absorbed into general county budgets.
Local legislators return to drawing board on tax reform
BARTON COUNTY, Kan. — State representatives are continuing to focus on property tax relief following the recent legislative session. Local officials reported attending a recent Barton County Farm Bureau meeting alongside Rep. Brett Fairchild and Rep. Sherri Brantley, noting that lawmakers are eager to address local taxation concerns and are currently running numbers with state officials to find viable avenues for reducing the local tax burden ahead of the next session. Brantley recently announced her reelection campaign for the Kansas House.

Humane society to address budget concerns
BARTON COUNTY, Kan. — The Golden Belt Humane Society is facing financial discussions, prompting a local call for community attendance at its upcoming meeting. It was announced the organization would meet at Inspire Fitness, located at 1904 12th St., to discuss ongoing budget issues impacting the animal shelter.
