Arkansas City Police Warn Against Drugged Driving Ahead of 420 Day, Statewide Campaign
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Arkansas City Police Department is reminding the public that driving under the influence of drugs, including marijuana, is both illegal and dangerous as April 20 approaches, a date commonly associated with increased marijuana use.
The department is joining law enforcement agencies across Kansas in a statewide safety campaign running April 17-21, during which drivers can expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on local roadways.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drugs such as marijuana can impair a driver's ability by slowing coordination, judgment and reaction time. Driving while impaired by any substance is against the law in all 50 states. Even in states where marijuana laws have changed, it remains illegal to operate a vehicle under the influence of the drug.
The department encouraged residents to plan ahead and make safe choices. Those who choose to use marijuana or any impairing substance are urged to arrange for a designated driver, use a rideshare service or call a cab. Anyone who observes a suspected impaired driver is asked to contact local law enforcement.
