Arkansas City Launches Dual Construction Projects at Wilson Park
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Multiple improvements are underway at Wilson Park as the city advances two major recreational projects: new pickleball courts and a splash pad.
City crews began removing former tennis courts this week to make way for four new pickleball courts, part of a long-term investment in park improvements. During its December 2 City Commission meeting, the city approved a contract with Multisport LLC to design and build the courts. The project will include post-tension concrete courts, lighting, fencing, surfacing and related site improvements.
The pickleball court project costs $235,500, fully funded through outside sources. A Kansas Wildlife and Parks Land and Water Conservation Fund grant administered by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks covers a significant portion of the cost. Local pickleball supporters raised the remaining funds through the Legacy Foundation of Cowley County. No city tax dollars will be used for construction.
On Monday, city staff and commissioners gathered at the park to mark the start of the splash pad project with a groundbreaking ceremony. Officials noted the unusually warm 70-degree February weather wouldn't have seemed probable a year ago.
Construction has begun on the splash pad, with crews mapping out the layout and project details. Several materials have already been delivered, marking an important step as the project officially moves into construction.
Completion dates for both projects were not immediately available.
The dual projects reflect the city's commitment to expanding recreational amenities and providing new opportunities for residents of all ages
