Arkansas City driver transported to hospital after vehicle strikes fire hydrant

ARKANSAS CITY — A single-vehicle accident Sunday morning resulted in a driver being transported to SCK Health for evaluation after her vehicle left the roadway and struck a fire hydrant.

At approximately 7:11 a.m. Dec. 29, the Arkansas City Police Department responded to an injury accident at the intersection of Cedar Street and Summit Street.

Initial information indicated a vehicle was traveling northbound in the 500 block of North Summit Street when it left the roadway on the left side and rolled. The vehicle struck a fire hydrant, causing damage, and came to rest near the intersection.

The driver was evaluated at the scene by the Arkansas City Fire/EMS Department and transported to SCK Health for further evaluation. The driver was later discharged.

The vehicle was identified as a black Jeep Grand Cherokee. The driver was identified as Noelia Gallegos of Ponca City. It is believed the driver may have fallen asleep, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway.

The incident remains under investigation.
