EMS personnel honored for dual life-saving efforts
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Arkansas City Commission recognized seven emergency medical services responders for their life-saving efforts during two cardiopulmonary arrest incidents earlier this year. Lt. Daniel Dedrick, paramedic Jaxson Slater, EMT Austyn Butler, EMT Mike Evinger and Capt. Tanner McClure were among those honored for successfully resuscitating two clinically deceased patients in January and February. Both patients, one of whom attended the meeting to personally thank the crew and report his return to work, were discharged from the hospital with full neurological function, an outcome that officials noted defies typical out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival statistics.
Fire station design process moves toward cost estimation
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Planning for the new Arkansas City fire station is advancing, with the next design update meeting scheduled for June 11. The city manager reported that the necessary amenities and functional design elements for the facility have largely been established. With the conceptual groundwork laid, city officials and architects will now begin the process of honing in on the project's estimated construction costs.
New water well comes online, replacing older infrastructure
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The city's water infrastructure received a boost last week when Well 16 officially went online May 27. According to the city manager's report, the transition to the new well is fully complete. The aging well it was built to replace has been successfully plugged and dismantled, ensuring continued reliability for the municipal water supply.
Commission approves engineering supplement for East Pressure Zone project
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — City commissioners unanimously approved a $19,750 supplemental agreement with Professional Engineering Consultants for the East Pressure Zone Improvements Project, bringing the total engineering contract to $376,750. The additional funds will cover survey work and geotechnical river drilling necessary after a land-swap deal was reached with a local property owner. The route adjustment was required because the Kansas Department of Transportation right-of-way along U.S. Highway 77 between Madison and Chestnut avenues was too congested to accommodate the new water line.
Evergy transmission line route raises safety concerns near hospital
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — A recent Kansas Corporation Commission approval of an Evergy transmission line route sparked safety concerns during the city manager's update. The newly approved route stretches from south Wichita to an area just north of SCK Health. Concerns were raised at the meeting over the alignment, with officials noting that the proximity of new power lines could potentially impact helicopters landing at the hospital. The eastern portion of the line's route has yet to be finalized.
City to hold extensive budget work session
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Arkansas City will begin charting its financial future during an all-day budget work session scheduled for June 5. The meeting, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will allow commissioners to review departmental requests and begin shaping the upcoming fiscal year's budget. The session will feature a midday break to bury a time capsule at City Hall, and the fire department is scheduled as the final budget presentation of the afternoon.
June 19 proclaimed Juneteenth National Independence Day
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — Mayor Tad Stover proclaimed June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth National Independence Day in Arkansas City. Local resident Robin Henderson accepted the proclamation, highlighting a series of upcoming local events to celebrate the holiday, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Arkansas City's annual Juneteenth celebration will feature fireworks, a children's book run and collaborative programs with the Northwest Community Center and the Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum.
