Commission approves plat for Casey's General Store expansion
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The city commission unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday to accept the replatting of the Casey's General Store at 3413 N. Summit St. to make way for a major site expansion. The development will feature a new diesel island and designated truck parking, which officials hope will alleviate traffic congestion caused by semi-trucks currently parking along 61st Road. The replatting process also corrected historical land dedication issues and established proper utility easements for the site.
Split vote advances $12,830 in assessments for downtown building repairs
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The city commission approved an ordinance levying $12,830.70 in special assessments for unpaid exterior structure repairs on downtown buildings, passing the measure 4-1. Commissioners discussed researching a legal judgment process for future code enforcement collections, though they opted to utilize the current framework for these existing bills.
Downtown Common Consumption Area expanded and hours extended
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The boundary for the downtown Common Consumption Area has been formally expanded to Walnut Avenue to accommodate special events, including the upcoming Arkalalah soapbox derby. The city commission unanimously approved the boundary change and extended the legal public drinking hours to 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday, though Sunday hours were not addressed in the extension. The relaxed boundaries also mean the designated Arkalalah beer garden at Wilson Park will no longer require restrictive rope fencing.
Emergency repairs approved for failing city water well
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The city commission unanimously approved a resolution authorizing payment to Lane Christensen Company for the emergency repair and rehabilitation of Well 12. Environmental services staff noted the well's failing production capabilities significantly contributed to the city's water supply shortages over the summer. While the exact cost of the contract was not immediately disclosed, the emergency repairs have been completed and fully funded using the department's existing operating budget.
City scrambling to address sinkhole near the ADM West Mill
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — City crews and contractors are working to address a sinkhole forming in the center of the road near the ADM West Mill on Madison Avenue. Public works staff reported the street surface is gradually caving in due to the top of an aging, 15-foot-deep sewer line giving way. Because the extreme depth exceeds the city crew's safe operational capabilities, officials are actively seeking contractors to repair the line before the sinkhole causes a major road hazard.
Wilson Park playground renovation bids revealed
ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — City officials announced the lowest bid for the upcoming Wilson Park playground construction project came in at $650,000. While the identities of the bidding companies were not immediately released, the $650,000 proposal — which city staff noted includes the preferred equipment option compared to a competing $700,000 bid — will be formally presented to the city commission for consideration and final approval at its next meeting.
