American Legion Post 24 Hosts Chamber Connection Event

More than 50 attendees learn about veterans organization's community impact and expanded membership

American Legion Post 24 Hosts Chamber Connection Event

The McPherson Chamber of Commerce gathered at American Legion Post 24, 401 N. Main, on November 6th for the weekly Chamber Connection, drawing more than 50 attendees to the historic Main Street location. Post 24 Commander Dan Hervey addressed one of the most common questions about veterans organizations: the difference between the American Legion and the VFW. Veterans who served in a war zone qualify for both organizations, while those who served during wartime—regardless of combat experience—are eligible for the Legion. The organization recently expanded its charter to include anyone who has served since Pearl Harbor in 1941, significantly broadening membership eligibility to more veterans and their families.

Post 24 faces the same membership challenges affecting Legion posts nationwide, as the veteran population has declined from 10% to approximately 1% of the total population, according to Hervey. To maintain its vital community presence, the post offers diverse membership options beyond traditional veteran membership, including the Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion, Legion Riders, and Social Memberships. The organization supports numerous community initiatives, including youth programs, scholarships, veteran outreach, and events such as Thursday Happy Hour, trivia nights, family gatherings, and the annual Toys for Kids Auction that benefits local families during the holidays.

The post recently completed renovations to its foyer, funded by the family of Victor Arnold Hedlund, a World War II veteran and past Post 24 Commander. The facility features a large meeting and dining hall, stage, and lounge, providing versatile space for reunions, celebrations, and community gatherings. Those interested in joining can visit any Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. to sign up, call 620-241-0343, or learn more online at alpost24.com.
