McPherson — A fundraising campaign organized by Citizen Journal raised more than $1,100 to support the care of six abandoned puppies at the McPherson Animal Shelter following their rescue from a Walmart parking lot on May 21.

The newspaper's fundraiser helped cover costs for around-the-clock care provided by shelter employees Emily Sanner, Haley Fallis and Matt Musser, who bottle-fed the newborns until police located their mother and reunited the family.

Citizen Journal Editor Molli Fawl said community involvement motivated her family's participation.

"We are an animal loving family, it was great to see the community step up and help these puppies," Fawl said.

The response proved swift and generous, according to Fawl.

"So many community members acted quickly to donate to support these puppies," she said.

McPherson Police Chief Mikel Golden said investigators successfully located the owner and brought the mother dog to the facility to nurse her pups until they are ready for adoption. The McPherson Police Department is preparing criminal charges against the owner.

Fawl encouraged continued support for local animal welfare efforts.

"The animal shelter does a great job protecting animals and finding good homes it is a great cause to support," she said.

The fundraiser demonstrates the power of community support for local animal welfare efforts. The puppies remain at the shelter as they await their forever homes.
